Arizona does not have an active resolution calling for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
In March of 2012 the Arizona Legislature passed HCM 2007 which asks Congress to expeditiously pass an Amendment to the Constitution of the United States requiring (with certain conditions) a balanced federal budget. Shortly thereafter this request was sent to Congressional leaders by the Arizona Secretary of State. We applaud these action and to assure their objectives are met we petition our elected representatives in the Arizona Legislature to pass a joint resolution calling upon Congress to call a convention of the states to solely consider a balanced budget amendment per Article V of the U. S. Constitution
Our objective in Arizona is to supplement HCM 2007 with a request to Congress – that, under Article V of the Constitution, a convention of the states be called to propose this amendment, ratify it, and submit it to states for approval.
The Arizona Legislature will not be back in session until next January 2013 – by then we must be prepared to make the breadth of support for a Balanced Budget Amendment known to our representatives in the State Legislature and the U. S. Congress.
